nirvana - smells like teen spirit (reggae version)

BoingBoing posted an awesome video of Bob Marley’s Is This Love? remixed remixed as metal. The video was produced by Andy Rehfeldt, who has done a bunch of other awesome remix/mashup/improvement projects. Like, for instance, Nirvana, performing Smells Like Teen Spirit, as reggae:

northern voice 2011 jam session

the after-conference gatherings at northern voice have always tended to be rather musical, so this year Grant went out and booked a rehearsal studio for us to jam without annoying neighbours. The Sanctuary, in East Van, is an incredible rehearsal space. I only recorded a small clip from the 11 hours (!) spent in The Sanctuary over 2 days. It was awesome, in every sense of the word. Seeing people I know share music together, with skill and talent I didn't know they had?...

Guitarcasting with Radio DS106

I had a bit of a duh/ahah! moment this evening. We've been messing around with Nicecast to broadcast audio from Skype and iTunes, and it hit me that it would be able to pick up sound from GarageBand just fine, too. Broadcasting live guitar jams over Radio DS106. I plugged my guitar into my amp, and connected the headphone jack from the amp to the line-in on my MacBook Pro. I plugged my headphones into the headphone jack on the computer, so I could hear as I "...

playlist story

A computer-generated story, using tracks in my iTunes library as source material [as per request](http://nogoodadvice.somethingkindaooooh.com/2011/02/04/visual-assignment/) A tale of mortality. Of acceptance. And of transcendence.

four chords

I mentioned on Twitter that I still suck pretty badly at playing my guitar. Scott suggested that I only need to know 2 chords. 2? hah! I know 4! So, Alan pointed out that all you NEED is 4 chords. If the 4 chords I know are the right 4 chords, I may be ready to start touring. Except for the rest of the whole I-still-suck-at-playing thing. But at least I’m having fun :-)

99 cents at a time

I just upgraded a bunch of tracks to iTunes+ DRM-free files. At the bottom of my "Purchased" album, I noticed the stats: So that's why she complains about the stream of iTunes charges on the Visa... Oops.

Upgrading my iTunes library

Best $50 I've spent in a long, long time. My music library is not pretty much DRM-free. What was that about the evil Apple lockin again? Update: doh. looks like the process has a glitch or two. I'm sure that'll get worked out really quickly though. This is what I get when I click the "Buy" button shown above: Update 2: GAH! I tried to post a question on the Apple Support site to see wtf, but can't seem to find the button to do that....

there's a theramin in my iPod!

I just found a new Coolest iPod Application. Theramin-ator. A multitouch theramin. On my iPod. Fracking awesome. I just spent the last half an hour playing with it, and it's pretty sweet. Especially once you start getting the hang of the multi-touch controls. You drag a finger (or fingers) around on the "control pad" to simulate moving through the theramin's fields. Horizontal axis is frequency, vertical is volume. Frequency ranges from a skull-rattling 40Hz to a brain-melting 2000Hz....

Why I love my iPod

This was my shuffle-ized playlist for the morning ride and cooldown. There isn't a radio station on the planet (satellite or terrestrial) that would have put a playlist like this together. It looks pretty eclectic, but the tracks all worked amazingly well against each other.
