Learning requires focus, and focus is a tool that needs to be trained. Just look at what happens in the text below with presumably already trained adults sitting at a professional conference on education. There's a difference between just talking and contributing to the conversation, between expressing and analyzing -- and knowing that, and knowing how and why to do that, is central to education. Whatever the tool set, that still must be achieved.

- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:57:53 -0400)
Back to the now. What will be different in an hour because of the discussion?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:57:26 -0400)
Would we live in space if there was no gravity?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:57:01 -0400)
It depends on the context that the concept is used.
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:56:51 -0400)
So is gravity really a truth?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:56:39 -0400)
Would we understand what is gravity if we lived in space?

- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:56:16 -0400)
No. We don't all agree what truth is. Just look at the archive of this discussion.
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:55:43 -0400)
I think I am back to the cheese and ready to have mine moved significantly
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:54:41 -0400)
WHy shouldn't we care?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:54:41 -0400)
If not what is the role of this tool?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:54:18 -0400)
such as trying different cheeses
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:53:57 -0400)

- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:53:52 -0400)
Do we care?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:53:48 -0400)
Learning is exploration
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:53:46 -0400)
some say learning is a change in behavior.
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:53:46 -0400)
most importantly being able to apply it to the situations.... appropriately.
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:53:35 -0400)
Are those keying making an impact on this session?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:53:27 -0400)
no learning is trying a new kind of cheese
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:53:21 -0400)
True
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:53:12 -0400)
Learning is remembering "content" (for lack of a better term)coupled with the ability to APPLY it to situations.
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:53:01 -0400)
learning is not JUST remebering
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:52:29 -0400)
and now we have the presentation and the interaction board coming together.
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:52:27 -0400)
What is goodness? What is truth? Now we're REALLY getting philosophical!
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:52:26 -0400)
What is learning not? Maybe that is the real question
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:52:15 -0400)
you're catching the spirit

nice! there we go
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:51:49 -0400)
What is learning?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:51:38 -0400)
but it comes back around to whether it is true and who says it is true and who has the right to say it is true.
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:51:22 -0400)
We create âgoodâ resources based on the criteria we value

It is the answer if it is true.
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:49:49 -0400)
common, it's saturday

A need to be productive --sorry cheese lover
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:49:44 -0400)
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:49:44 -0400)
Who Moved My Cheese...?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:49:26 -0400)
The answer to everything is "Web pages." A good friend taught me this long ago. Well, it is the answer to ALMOST everything....
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:49:23 -0400)
The format certainly produces numerous questions. Conversation may be producing some thoughts beyond questions.
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:49:11 -0400)
why isn't anyone laughing at my cheese comments?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:49:07 -0400)
ahhh easy. Cheese can be a metaphor for learning and truth.
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:48:46 -0400)
probably in between the bread
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:48:36 -0400)
yeah, and where on earth are you going to fit the cheese conversation in?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:47:57 -0400)
Is it really about tying the threads or the exploration of the ideas?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:47:46 -0400)
train of thought is difficult via this mode however it certainly does push thoughts. Try as I might the focus changes so quickly that even my desire to multi task is being challenged
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:47:35 -0400)
So you're gonna try to tie all these threads TOGETHER, Stephen?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:47:16 -0400)
cheese purists would argue that a good cheese must be at least 6 months or older
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:46:18 -0400)
What if we started linking in lit sources and lit reviews in our blogs?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:45:27 -0400)
Qualitative purists would argue that a classical lit review biases the research being conducted based on contexts that may or may not be relevant.
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:45:23 -0400)
A good paper is gramatically correct, understandably written, and appropriately cites the work of others. Yes, the reader is informed with those "trappings." There must be content.
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:44:57 -0400)
yeah, pretty cheesy
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:44:36 -0400)

- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:44:14 -0400)
i eat cheese, therefore i am
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:44:08 -0400)
Enough with the cheese already!!
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:44:08 -0400)
personal taste.
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:43:57 -0400)
do we know what counts as a good cheese?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:43:37 -0400)
Is flux the best description?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:43:03 -0400)
ah, a fellow brie lover
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:43:02 -0400)
Where is Marc when we need him?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:42:40 -0400)
brie is tasty on a toasted bagel.
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:42:38 -0400)
"No longer in place" or merely in flux...?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:42:36 -0400)
there are also many uses of cheese that need to be explored
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:42:04 -0400)
As Prensky asked, should we be teaching in an 18th century model or redefining the model of teaching to meet the challenges of the 21st century?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:41:57 -0400)
I am wondering how many of us are using this new experience and could we have a conversation outside the verbal chit chat? If so lets watch what will happen on the screen.
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:41:45 -0400)
and the knowledge continually grows, expands, and can change.
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:41:03 -0400)
depends if we have a hungry tummy
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:40:54 -0400)
Ideas attributed to people makes sense -- thus avoiding remarks out of context.
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:40:24 -0400)
We all buy into the BODY OF KNOWLEDGE, not any specific article(s) within it....
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:40:23 -0400)
by the cheese!
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:40:04 -0400)
Should our field be defined by the people or the ideas
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:39:46 -0400)
What do you think this should look like?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:39:21 -0400)
Name names! Our field has been defined by many individuals.
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:39:01 -0400)
but it's enough time to talk about claymation
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:38:59 -0400)
Yup
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:38:36 -0400)
As I just experienced, 10 seconds does not give the audience a successful experience to share their thoughts via text. Great learning.
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:38:34 -0400)
then it's not truth
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:38:21 -0400)
Truth does change
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:37:58 -0400)
Richard Clark's "Mere Vehicles" statement; the diffusion of innovation literature
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:37:48 -0400)
and they've gone wrong
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:37:30 -0400)
Can't truth change?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:37:22 -0400)
i think that a few of us here are wearing the wrong trousers
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:37:17 -0400)
to discover truth, but some would say that we are to tell them what is truth.
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:36:42 -0400)
it's like no truth i've ever tested
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:36:36 -0400)
The interchange of this activity and the depth of response creates for eveyone in learning the need to examine the thought processes that occur via writing versus speaking. Will learners in the future be able to share their thoughts as eloquently via text? Will our verbal comments now that we are being videoed cause us to be more reflective in our speech?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:36:12 -0400)
it's like no cheese I've ever tasted
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:36:09 -0400)
Isn't our job to help people be able to discover what Truth will be in the future?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:35:55 -0400)
camembert?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:35:51 -0400)

Quantum physics calls into question the laws of science which have assumed to be absolute for so long.
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:35:09 -0400)
and Grommit really likes cheese
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:34:58 -0400)
unless grommit has eaten it
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:34:34 -0400)
ask wallace, he usually has cheese
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:34:03 -0400)
Learning is connecting and applying
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:33:36 -0400)
and i'm hungry
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:33:23 -0400)
i'm just anymouse
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:33:14 -0400)
Learning is NOT just remembering
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:32:59 -0400)
but who is to say that one is wrong?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:32:57 -0400)
anyone have some cheese?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:32:56 -0400)
not if one is wrong
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:32:32 -0400)
So if we may have no right to determine what is Truth then both the instructor and learner can be right.
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:32:13 -0400)
no, He has not.
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:31:33 -0400)
chaos theory (science) is based on different outcomes from the same inputs.
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:31:27 -0400)
Ahhh and now we move into the metaphysical. If God has the right and we don't always know what God considers what is right then we as society may have no real right to determine what is Truth.
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:31:25 -0400)
But God has explicitly given us the right to define OUR "truth" differently...and the RESPONSIBILITY to accept the consequences.
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:30:57 -0400)
God has the right
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:29:16 -0400)
cause I don't like cheese
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:29:00 -0400)
Nor am I
- Lion (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:28:56 -0400)
but who has the right to determine what is Truth?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:28:32 -0400)
How do we Know...?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:28:26 -0400)
oh and i am not a mouse
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:28:22 -0400)
there is such a thing as right and wrong...as Truth with a capital T
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:27:52 -0400)
What if everything that we know is not the reality? Think about the Matrix.
Society thought that what they saw was reality but in fact it wasn't.
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:27:39 -0400)
Pedagogy exists; the art is in the "teachable moment."
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:27:32 -0400)
and that we don't need to be in Iraq?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:26:43 -0400)
as long as there are humans in the context, can we be certain about anything?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:26:33 -0400)
and that global warming is a reality?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:26:12 -0400)
Exactly
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:25:52 -0400)
Poodle Kicking 101
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:25:51 -0400)
and that the holocaust did not happen?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:25:50 -0400)
the same society that said the world is flat?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:25:32 -0400)
What if society is wrong?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:25:32 -0400)
That's Krathwohl's point about "demonstrated generality": in the social sciences we never reach the level of "proof" (or "know")....
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:25:20 -0400)
Most people would say that society determines whether the learner is right.
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:25:02 -0400)
there you go again
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:24:41 -0400)
Does every question have to have an answer?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:24:22 -0400)
you did not answer the question
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:24:01 -0400)
Who is to say that the learners are wrong?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:23:40 -0400)
who is to say that the learners are right?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:23:19 -0400)
BlackBoard is a disease!
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:22:56 -0400)
Who is to say that the person providing the instruction is right?
Shouldn't it just be facilitated and let the learners reach their
own conclusion and experience whether it is right or wrong.
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:22:36 -0400)
blackboard may be wrapped but it's not a present
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:22:33 -0400)
Is Blackboard "wrapped social presence"?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:21:47 -0400)
wrapped or unwrapped matters not
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:21:01 -0400)
What is more important the social or the presence?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:20:46 -0400)
i'd like some social presents
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:20:17 -0400)
we know that cause it says it on the web
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:18:39 -0400)
Welcome

Will there always be teachers?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:18:17 -0400)
students need to know how to read
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:17:53 -0400)
There are always learners?

dat's true
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:17:40 -0400)
Krathwohl would suggest that at best there are "demonstrated generalities"

But you are creating Stephen. That is important.
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:15:02 -0400)
it must be true--I saw it on the Web
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:13:51 -0400)

Who does quality assurance for the Personal Learning Environment of the novice learner?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:13:23 -0400)
through review

Blogs are personal. Why should we suppress the creative thought of a blog.
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:12:55 -0400)
exactly!
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:12:36 -0400)
learning = information input?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:12:27 -0400)
Blogs are great, but what about quality or review of content?
- Anymouse (Sat, 27 Oct 2007 14:12:13 -0400)
3 years?

novelty has worn down but not quite off yet ;)
