Conferences
SIGCSE Virtual 2024 (via Peter Drake)
a virtual conference hosted by ACM’s Special Interest Group on Computer Science Education. When I was working on my dissertation, SIGSE wasn’t even on my radar. Which, in hindsight, is kind of surprising (although I came from the direction of SoTL rather than from Computer Science, soβ¦).
Looking at the program, golly, that’s a lot of AI sessionsβ¦ Anyway. An online conference, no travel necessary.
Webstuff
Steph Ango @ Obsidian: Save the web - announcing a new web clipper for Obsidian, replacing the previous bookmarklet.
Molly White: Blogroll - a list of some blogs, newsletters, news sites, with OPML links for each category. I dig the “omit substack blogs” feature.
Luke Winkie @ Slate: Nardwuaring Nardwuar (via DrGarcia).
Nardwuar is one of the greatest interviewers to practice the art of interviewing. The level of research he conducts to prepare for an interview is just mindblowing.
πΏ Watching
β β β ββ Terminator: Dark Fate (2019).
It was on. I hadn’t seen it. A heartwarming story of a drapery salesman who gets caught up in the hype around AI.
Monday Night NHL on Prime. LA Kings at Calgary.
It was a good game, and the Flames totally outplayed the Kings. I really wanted to hate Prime’s broadcast, but it wasn’t horrible. The colour commentary was ok. The intermission hosts were meh, but bringing out Mike Vernon was pretty cool. But - before the game, they just cycled through open cameras and microphones to give the vibe around the arena. I started the livestream 30 minutes before game time, and it was actually pretty cool just kinda being there with no commentary. Something that can’t be done on TV because there’s another show on the channel beforehand. Livestream broadcasts don’t have that limitation, so they can do some interesting things with the format.
β β β β β Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964).
It’d be 5 stars just for Peter Sellers’ phone call scenes - the calls from President Merkin Muffley (Sellers) to Premier Kissov from the war room are just perfection. And Group Captain Lionel Mandrake’s (Sellers) phone call to the president (also played by Sellers) was just brilliant. “You’re gonna have to answer to the Coca Cola company.” And George C. Scott. And James Earl Jones. ππ»ππ»
β β β β β Cast Away (2000). I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve watched it.
π Reading
β β β β β Managing Transitions: Making the most of change. Bridges & Bridges. (2016).
Probably the best book I’ve read this year (definitely the best leadership book), with insightful ideas for how to approach change and transitions.
β β β β β Generative AI and Education: Digital Pedagogies, Teaching Innovation, and Learning Design. MairΓ©ad Pratschke. (2024).
An outstanding overview of generative AI and how to approach it within higher education - including connections between learning theories, practice, and organizational strategies.
